Assessments are often utilized at the start of therapy to determine a baseline, or throughout the therapeutic process to determine progress.  Assessments can include:

  • Standardized Testing

  • Skilled Clinical Observations

  • Parent/Caregiver report

Assessments, including standardized testing, involve a lot of movement and play based activities and should not feel like "work" for your child!  Clinical observations are a critical part of assessments, as these skilled observations provide significant information about the way a child takes in sensory information from his or her environment, how the child moves and gets around in his or her environment, and how these skills impact the child's learning and development.  Standardized testing quantifies different skills and challenge areas, but results should always be qualified by the individualized factors that may be impacting a child's scores on standardized testing.

Common standardized assessments utilized for sensory and/or motor development are:

  • Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT)

  • Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS)

  • Sensory Profile

  • Observations Based on Sensory Integration Theory
